Coon foul shot lifts FHS over Lady Bears

RED ROCK — Carol Coon hit perhaps the biggest free throw of her high-school career. The Frontier High senior connected on 1-of-2 shots from the charity stripe with 4.1 seconds remaining as the Class A No. 16 Lady Mustangs knocked off 2A No. 5 Pawnee, 63-62, Monday at home. “We just made too many mistakes in the second half,” said PHS girls coach Justin Brown. “It was a fun game though. Both teams shot the ball pretty well and it just went back and forth.”
The Lady Bears took a 9-2 lead in the first quarter when freshman Britney Morgan scored on a fast-break lay-up, but FHS finished the period on an 18-0 run. Trailing 20-9, PHS went on a 15-1 run of its own midway through the second and held a 30-27 advantage at halftime. No lead was safe in the second half. The Lady Mustangs (6-5) took a 39-33 lead early in the third quarter, but a three-pointer by PHS sophomore Whitney LeGrand tied the contest just a few moments later.
The Lady Bears (4-2) led by six, 48-42, going into the final eight minutes but FHS was determined to keep things interesting. Clay Stephens’ squad jumped out to a 56-50 advantage late in the game after a pair of treys by freshman Hope Conneywerdy. PHS got back within one, 58-57, when sophomore Kelsey Barlow hit a shot behind the arc with 1:25 remaining, and with 20.6 seconds left, the contest was once again tied at 62-62 after a three-pointer by Lady Bear senior Kelsie Green.
During Frontier’s final possession, Coon — who finished with eight points — was fouled by Green and sent to the free-throw line. FHS senior Sharon Forté recorded a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Conneywerdy also scored 14 points and freshman Jayda Gardner added 13. Senior Allison LittleCrow chipped in with 10 points and a team-high 11 rebounds.
For the Lady Bears, LeGrand and senior Ashtin Tiger each scored 14 points while Green contributed 12.

Black Bears cruise
Pawnee High junior Keiton Page scored a team-high 40 points as the 2A No. 2 Black Bears routed Class A No. 11 Frontier, 78-55, Monday. Page — who has verbally committed to Oklahoma State — shot 8-of-12 from three-point range to help PHS improve to 7-2. The Mustangs, who were without leading scorer Adam Beck, fell to 6-5.
“We don’t care who we’re missing — we expect to go out there and be competitive,” said FHS boys coach Bob Weckstein. “I didn’t feel like we were competitive (Monday). We’re pretty disappointed.” The contest was tied at 8-8 after a three-pointer by FHS sophomore Brandon Crenshaw midway through the opening period, but Pawnee took over from that point. The Black Bears outscored Frontier, 21-9, in the second and held a 39-19 advantage at intermission.
The three-time defending state champions committed 29 turnovers Monday. Sophomore David Spires led the Mustangs with 15 points, the squad’s lone senior James Bible added 11 and freshman Cale Jackson chipped in with 10.
For PHS, senior Nick Bell also reached double figures — recording 10 points — while fellow senior Jonas Lyons contributed eight. “Our kids came out and played really well,” said Black Bear coach David Page. “We’re getting more aggressive and a lot of things are going good for us. We’ve got a good squad ... I think we can be in the (State) finals playing OCS.” FHS and the Black Bears will collide on the hardwood again on Jan. 16 at Pawnee.
